This is the movie Maniac Magee that Nickelodeon made based on the book by Jerry Spinelli. This movie is nothing like the book, so if you have not read the book yet, please don't ruin it by watching the movie first. Read the book and get your own mental image in your mind about what you think the movie is going to look like, then take a look at the movie. For my students - if you want to put the movie on your Wiki, go to this website http://www.nick.com/videos/clip/NTV_Maniac_Magee_full.html and below the movie click on "copy". Then open up your Wiki page, go to insert, HTML/Java Script and put the code there.
I picked this picture to symbolize Maniac Magee because there is a lot of racist issues in this book. First of all, there are two sides of the town Two Mills - the East Side and the West Side. The West Side belongs to the white people and the East side belongs to the black people. Maniac is torn between the two sides. The books shows this especially when he is walking out of town down Hector Street after he had untied Cobble's Knot when the whites are on one side and the blacks are on the other. Right now racism is very prominent in the book because the McNab family is setting up a pill box in their house for the possibility of the black people attacking them. It is so sad to see Russell and Piper using toy guns pretending to shoot black people. :(
